Site Progress

Published by Jackie Plage2 min read

Overall I'm pretty happy with the progress I've made! I won't pretend it wasn't without headaches—there definitely were a few of those along the way—but it's all in place now and I really love it! I might (probably will) tweak things here and there in the coming weeks, but the design is a perfect blend of modern and retro.

Apologies if the colors cause you some temporary blindness, but it looks so pretty I didn't want to change it. As my eyes aren't the best due to age, I may have to think twice about it but it's staying for now. There's always the theme switcher in the sidebar if you prefer to use the (vastly inferior) light theme. Edit: nope, I removed the light theme, sorry!

The Current Workflow

I at least have my workflow flowing smoothly. It consists of the following:

  • Write post in markdown using Obsidian.
  • Move files manually over to my local GitHub repository.
  • Render locally to check everything is ok.
  • Push to my GitHub repository.
  • Netlify autodetects the changes, builds, and publishes the site.

Static Site Advantages

Admittedly this sounds like much more work than using something like Ghost, where all you need do is type up your post and hit publish. But the whole point of a static site generator is that it doesn't need a remote backend; my public folder is just a collection of static files. This makes it much speedier to render and a lot less of a headache to maintain. Plus, it honestly doesn't take as long as it sounds once you're used to it.

It's a slight pain having to move post files over manually, but not the end of the world. If I was a clever coder I'm sure I could make a script to do that for me, but as I'm not, I'll leave things as they are.

Should I implement comments? Honestly not sure I can be bothered. For the very few people who will read this site, they can probably just DM me somewhere on social media. My friend Fab has brilliantly gone back to using webmentions, but I've no idea how to set that up yet.

I'll look into it!
