RIP Ozzy
Honouring a Brummie Legend
It's very rare that a celebrity death gets to me. "Celeb" culture as a whole is a complete turn off to me and I'll never understand people who bathe in it. This one hits different though.
Today we lost a legendary icon of music and a founding father of metal. Ozzy Osbourne died today, a mere 3 weeks after the momentous event that was his final concert.
Musically, I must admit that I never really followed Ozzy's solo career, but I've been an ardent fan of early Black Sabbath since I ran around mimicking Iron Man as a 3yr old girl. As I write this, I'm 51, so that's quite a long time. Black Sabbath was probably the first band I ever truly loved, and I still listen to those early albums to this day.
My family are also from a town that neighbours Aston, so not only was Ozzy a fellow Brummie (if you're not familiar, that just means somebody from Birmingham, England), he was also a local legend. My Dad was a huge fan in those early Sabbath days, and saw them live in that era. So lucky, and I'm so jealous.
In case it escaped your notice, the very name of this site is also a Black Sabbath song. I won't lie, it's freaked me out a tiny bit. This domain has sat unused for months, but days before Ozzy dies I decide to make use of it? Make of that what you will, but it feels like a weird coincidence!
Aside from the music, Ozzy has obviously always been a controversial figure to many. He had his faults, as do we all, but you had to admire his determination to live his life in the way he wanted and to hell with anyone who didn't agree. I often wish I could be more like thatβthe sentiment is within me but also anxiety gets in the way.
Here's to Ozzy and the undoubted impact he's had on the world.
RIP.
